On the Item List window, right-click on it.

We're unable to automatically assign a numbering sequence (like how transaction numbers work). However in both versions, you'll still have to manually assign these numbers (since there are a variety of item serial numbers). You can also use the Manufacturer's Part Number on the item's settings if possible. You can assign a custom field to add the internal inventory identification number.
